A man has been charged with burglary after a popular shop on Redcar High Street was broken into at the weekend.
Staff arrived at the Miss Lily's store on Saturday morning to discover that the shop had been targeted overnight.
In total it is alleged that takings totalling around £7,000 were taken, with money also being taken from Christmas cards, and the theft of Christmas presents that were being stored on the premises.
Following the thefts, a 36 year old man was arrested.
Yesterday he appeared at Teesside Magistrates Court charged with burglary.
A local MP has raised 'deep concern' over policing in East Cleveland.
MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, Simon Clarke, has expressed his concern about the level of police cover in East Cleveland and has requested action "as a matter of urgency".
Simon says that East Cleveland faces a unique challenge to policing.
Not only is the area predominantly rural, sparsely populated and difficult to reach but, compared to many other regional rural areas, it is far less affluent and thus subject to higher crime pressures.
Simon says that these higher crime pressures are not reflected in the distribution of the police across the region.
He has now written to Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger to express his concerns.
Cleveland Fire Brigade are offering free vehicle winter safety checks as part of their winter driving campaign.
The event, which is taking place at Coulby Newham Fire Station this coming Saturday between 10am-4pm launches the Brigade’s Winter Driving Campaign, which has the slogan 'A two minute check prevents a wreck'
The aim of the campaign is to encourage drivers to be prepared for adverse weather and road conditions as the winter months draw closer.
This could include poor visibility, standing water, icy or snowy conditions.
The Brigade will be teaming up with both national and independent garages that will be on hand at the event to carry out the checks, including tyres, lights, wipers, fluid levels and washer bottle.
Motorists will be offered a free screen wash top up, ice-scraper and handy safety advice checklist to get prepared and keep safe on the road.
