A round up of Local News in Redcar and Cleveland for Monday 16th May 2016.
Thousands of students in our area are set see the biggest shake-up of further education on Teesside in a generation.
Plans have been unveiled to merge Redcar college and Middlesbrough College, in a move which authorities is needed to create “world-class” further education for our area.
The shake-up could also see Stockton Riverside College joining up with Darlington College, and Hartlepool College and Hartlepool Sixth Form College could also be also set to merge.
It is not clear how many jobs could affected under the proposals.
The plans follow a review of sixth form colleges and further education providers which has been carried out as part of a nationwide government programme.
It looked at further education provision across the five local authority areas of Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton.
The draft recommendations will now go forward to public consultation.
A hair and beauty learning hub has achieved the notable milestone of creating jobs for 26 young students.
Mosaic, which is a commercial salon based at Redcar & Cleveland College, enables beauty therapy and hairdressing students to learn their trade under the watch of experienced tutors.
Open to the public, the salon allows students to trade in the same way a business would and hundreds of customers have passed through its doors since its launch in 2013.
In the last year alone, 26 of Mosaic graduates have either found employment or started their own business after completing their studies. Of the 20 beauty therapy students who found work, three are plying the trade in five-star hotels and one is working on board a luxury cruise ship.
Other beauty therapy and hairdressing students are employed in Teesside salons or have launched their own ventures.
Redcar Athletic go into their final match of the season tonight looking to come out as the Wearside League's new record holder for the number goals scored in a season.
As long as they match the number of goals that Stockton Town score in their game against Cleator Moor Celtic tonight, Redcar Athletic will become the new record holder.
Both teams have already surpassed the previous record set by Horden during the 1969/70 season of 158 goals and currently Redcar Athletic have scored 1 more goal than Stockton Town. The current totals are Redcar Athletic 163 and Stockton Town 162.
