Mining operations have been suspended for today after a fire broke out underground earlier this morning.

North East Ambulance sent a Hazardous Area Response Team, senior officer, two Ambulances and a patient transport vehicle to the ICL UK site around 3am, with Police attending and Cleveland Fire Brigade sending four appliances that were on kept on standby.

The Mines Rescue Team dealt with the fire and it's now been extinguished.

In total 11 people were located, with seven taken to James Cook Hospital believed to be suffering the effects of smoke.

Officials from HM Inspectorate of Mines are at the mine and ICL UK will be working with them to carry out a full investigation into the incident.
